    Description

Up for sale is a 1961 restrike of the 1861 Confederate Cent, made from the original defaced dies.
    Description
: The token is made from "goldine", a brass alloy, and measures approximately 19mm in diameter, the size of a penny.
These restrikes were made by Robert Bashlow in 1961, who used the original (defaced) 1861 dies made by engraver Robert Lovett to make copy dies to make these coins. Lovett was afraid he would be charged with treason for aiding the Confederacy and so he cancelled the dies. The hammer blows on the obverse and chisel marks on the reverse he made are clearly visible.
After being used to mint the 1961 restrikes, the dies were donated to the Smithsonian.
