Description
This medal (or token) was issued in 1932 for the celebration of the opening of the new building of the First National Bank in Ithaca, New York, and it simulates a coin of ancient Ithaca. One side has a bust of Odysseus, who in Greek mythology was King of Ithaca (Latin: Ulysses), and the reverse has the wordsCOIN OF ANCIENT ITHACA - ODYSSEUS
along the rim and, in the center, the words
TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF THE NEW BUILDING OF THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF ITHACA, N. Y. MAY, 1932
(note that this was during the Great Depression). The diameter is
approximately 32 mm (1-1/4"), and references indicate that the composition is bronze.
This item is in extremely fine condition, with very light actual wear, signs of handling, toning, and soiling, and it remains fairly bright.
