    Description

    Up for auction is a
1900-1901 Catalogue of The Lyon & Healy Collection of Rare Old Violins Chicago IL. It has 245 pages, weighs .61 lb., is 7" tall, 5 1/4" wide and 5/8" thick. It was case bound with sewing through the fold. The Lion's share of the pages of this catalog are dedicated to the listing and descriptions of 856 violins and their sales price. I can speculate that some of these violins are still being played by modern conductors and musicians.
The first violin listed for sale is an Antonio Stradivari, Cremona, 1714 violin priced at ,000. There are 48 facsimiles highlighted in goldenrod old violin makers labels throughout the catalog. On the first page is the poem: The Poor Fiddle's Ode To His Old Fiddle, author unknown, that I believe was first published by the Musical World of London in 1834. The page is torn on the upper left corner, which tore away a few of the words of the first few lines. It begins: "Torn, Worn, Oppressed I mourn, Bad, Sad, Three-quarters mad, Money gone, Credit none, Duns at door, half a score..."  The pages have deckle/uncut edges. Categories of other items for sale in this catalog are: Strings; Instrument Cases; The Restoration of Old Violins; Certificates & Expert Opinion of Old Violins; Whitelaw's Cremona Varnish; Violin Music-Studies & Solos; Violin & Piano Music; Music for Two Violins; Three & Four Violins; Trios; Quartettes; Quintettes; Violins and 'Cello; Violin & Organ;  'Cello & Organ; Violoncello Solos & Schools; 2 'Cellos; 4 'Cellos; Piano, Violins & 'Cello; 'Cello & Piano; Double Bass Solos & Schools; Misc. Arrangements; and Violin Literature.
